Comment Spam
I got a single spam item in comments yesterday, and I noticed it. I also removed it as soon as I noticed it. I also knew that the flood would be coming soon. Once a spammer finds a site that accepts unauthenticated comments, then that site is in for a world of hurt. I thought that I had a week or so before I really had to start worrying about it.
Nope.
Starting at about 4 AM this morning, the floodgates opened. Over 200 comments were submitted from over 200 different IP addresses. This means someone got their zombie network to attack my blog. Since it was a distributed attack, I couldn’t just go into the firewall and block all access to all ports from a certain IP or IP range. I went into the anti-spam settings for my blog and turned them all on. I know that this will make it harder to leave me comments, but it’s a necessary thing in these days of the violent Internet.
You’ll now have to pass a CAPTCHA check to post a comment. I’m sorry about this, but it’s about the only thing that I can do.
