Reading For Enjoyment

I used to read for many hours a week for the sheer pleasure of doing so. I’ve found that lately all I read are school books, and technical manuals. I really miss the hours of immersing myself in someone else’s story for a hours on end. Because of this, I’ve decided to dedicate a few hours every week to reading something that serves no purpose other than enjoying the story. I don’t intend to learn from the book, apply any practical knowledge from the book to my studies, profession, or hobbies. I simply want to read for the fun of reading.

I just picked up a few more books from a used book store where I have some credit. I found that the credit will only be good through May 1st when the store is due to close (or move, I wasn’t quite clear on the story.) I need to go in and pick up some more books. Most of the books that I’m looking at are $4 per book, so that gives me 8 more books that I have to find. It shouldn’t be hard to find 8 more books to read, but spending the time reading them is going to be hard.

I just counted the books that I have on my “to read” shelf, and there are 34 books up there. Some are short (the Narnia books), but some are pushing 400 pages. Some of them I have read before (The Long Run, the original Shannara series, and Lord of the Rings,) but many of them are going to be fresh and new for me. Some come recommended from friends while others come from authors that I really enjoy.

I won’t do any book reviews because I don’t want to give away any secrets, and I’m a horrible reviewer. I would have to type up my thoughts and ideas on each chapter as I read the book in order to do it justice. That sounds too much like homework for me, and I’m going to read just for the enjoyment of reading.
